Our story

Since July 2006, a group of artists has been working together to create affordable shared studio space for Exeter. In early 2007 we carried out a small research study, funded by the Arts Council, to address the level of demand. Following this we attempted to secure a building in Cowley Bridge Road but the rental contract fell through.

Exeter Artspaces took over 4 Red Lion Lane in September 2007. The low rent reflected both the temporary nature of the tenancy and the poor condition of the building.

Owned by Urban Exe, the building is due for demolition and redevelopment by 2009.

Improvements have been basic but necessary to bring the building into use as studios.

Blocked drains and erratic plumbing were just two of the urgent issues we had to address. The building is still not watertight.

Once emergency maintenance was complete, we were able to start dividing up the building into studio areas.

The average studio area is approximately 150 square feet and costs £79 per calendar month inclusive of bills.
Some 200 people joined us on 30th November to celebrate our opening.

Artists such as Peter Randall Page, Susan Derges, Jilly Edwards, Chris Chapman, Jem Southam and Andre Stitt donated mystery boxes to be sold alongside work by resident artists in our art takeaway fundraiser. Much of the food and drink was donated by local producers.
